CRF Design A CRF is more than a means to collect information from clinical sites. Its content and layout can imply success or failure in any study. In DataFax, the CRF also decides on your Data Entry screen, that is, the CRF is your Data Entry screen.
As a CRF is one of the cornerstone of your study, for any new DataFax customer it has become a ‘rule of engagement’ that the CRF is created by Thorin, thus ensuring that your first DataFax will be a success story. But also existing DataFax clients rely on our experience and outsource the CRF design to Thorin. More detailed information on our vision on CRF design can be found in this presentation held at the DataFax User Group meeting in 2007. Depending on the Requirements, Thorin is using Adobe’s Framemaker or InDesign for CRF creation. A typical example where Indesign is the preferred choice is when a multi-language CRF is required. In Framemaker, this would imply creating separate CRFs, one for each language, and each with the same layout.
InDesign has the concept of layers, so a CRF could consist of multiple layers, where each layer can be turned on or off. So there is one layer with all the structural and fixed elements, like barcodes, boxes, graphics, etc. And a separate layer for each language version of the CRF. An example can be found in the following CRF page, containing over 20 different languages. Note: to see the different languages, click on the ‘+’ sign in the layer box to open the different layers. You will see the ‘Text EN’ and ‘Background’ layers set to ‘visible’. For the Taiwan version, uncheck ‘Text EN’ and check ‘Text Taiwan’.
